Starbucks Taps into the Mobility Trend with Launch of Two iPhone Apps & Mobile Payment Testing
Starbucks has instituted two new mobile applications for the iPhone and iTouch that are set to revolutionize the way the stores bring in customers and do business. The first application is a customizable general app that allows customers to save their favorite drinks and Starbucks locations and check nutritional information and the amenities of different stores. While the app is far from revolutionary as far as iPhone apps go, it is the first step Starbucks has taken into a growing market. The second app, however, is the first of its kind and a potentially revolutionary concept. It allows users to upload their Starbucks and credit card information onto the app itself and reload their card on the go. In 16 Starbucks locations, the iPhone itself can be used as a Starbucks card, displaying a bar code and being used as a method of payment.
The first application, while in no way revolutionary, will help Starbucks compete with other franchises capitalizing on the rising app trend. The customization of the customer's preferences and accessibility of the app will increase the ease with which a potential customer can locate a Starbucks with their desired amenities, and the open analysis of the drinks and nutrition facts will keep customers feeling confident and comfortable. The second application is where the real potential for growth lies, taking payment digital and turning the customer's iPod or iPhone into, essentially, a wallet. This accessibility and ease will encourage the use of the Starbucks credit card and, if successful, provide inspirations for other companies to follow suit.

I believe that both of the iphone starbucks apps will be great assets for the Starbuck's franchises. The first app will provide the user with general knowledge about their favorite drink or Starbucks store location. As a Starbuck's devout consumer, I would love to be able to find the closest Starbucks to me when I am in an unfamiliar area. I also believe that being able to find the nutritional value of a drink would help people be more aware of the amount of calories they are consuming. Overall, I believe that the first app would be very useful as extra knowledge. The second app was very interesting and one of a kind. The fact that a person could use their iphone to pay for their drinks would be so convient. I believe that profits would increase with the ability to use an ipone as a wallet. I also agree with Jesse that the accessibility and ease of the Starbucks app will serve as a model for other companies to follow. I strongly believe that both apps are going to be a great benefit for Starbuck's sucess.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jesse and both the iphone Starbucks apps will be very valuable for Starbuck's franchises. These apps will be very beneficial to many people who love to go to starbuck's constantly. Also it would be very valuable for people to know interesting facts about their favorite drinks as well. These apps are also helpful for people who are like on a diet to know watch how many calories they have consuming as well while drinking these drinks. When people go out of town or something they would like to know where the close starbucks is and this app would truly help them find the close one around them.
ReplyDeletei agree that both of these apps are going to be helpful. i think that the barcode is going to cut down on items needed to be carried which will be valued by customers. i do how ever think we need to adress the security issue of how accesible is this information???
